Learning Spanish in Monteverde Costa Rica

by Janet K. Rustiford

Obviously there are millions of ways to learn Spanish. One way that is most effective is, while taking classes, to live with a family that only speaks Spanish. This way you have no way of speaking English and have to practice Spanish all day long.

A great place to learn Spanish is in Monteverde, Costa Rica. In Monteverde, there are two large schools where your class size ranges between four and five students. If you would rather work only with one person, you can hire a private instructor.

When hiring a private instructor, be sure to ask about their past experiences. Better yet, if you have connections in town, ask for a recommendation. Taking private lessons will increase your one-on-one time with the teacher.

Before you start paying for lessons, make sure that you really want to learn. It is important that you understand that the process is challenging and will be difficult at times. Give yourself to the language and you will be speaking soon.

Be sure to schedule classes for a minimum of three hours per day. Once you are done with class, make a plan to go out and interact with the locals. Ask lots of questions, it does not matter if you do not understand the responses. It is for practice.

A great trick while studying in Monteverde, is to seek out a favorite view that is inspiring. One that looks over the Gulf of Nicoya is best. A gem of a place is the patio of Hidden Canopy Tree House Hotel. If you time it right you can catch the sunset from there, something almost life changing.

Make time every night to communicate with your host family. Review your new words or phrases with them. They can correct you and help you practice correct pronunciation.

Use your resources, listen to Spanish music or watch a Spanish TV show. These are little things that can help you . If the TV has subtitles, you can quickly learn useful phrases and common words. Just do not let yourself become dependent on the TV!

The most important thing in learning Spanish is practice. Some people fear trying. Make sure you talk, read and write Spanish daily. The locals or hotel staffs in Monteverde love to help people that try, so get out there and start!
