How To Spend Your Vacations In Amsterdam?

by Robert M Freeman

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has attractive architecture and canals that go throughout the city, making it a great landscape. The citizens speak English in addition to their local language, so as the communication difficulty being resolved it is a great city for tourists.

Amsterdam is filled with great things to do, whether you like shopping, music, art, food, or history. You can visit this place all year round, but it does get extremely cold in the winter. Spring is filled with tulips, and is thus a great season to visit if you are interested in having a holiday here.

The city has almost 7000 registered historic buildings, so walking through the city is a very pleasant experience. During World War II, no buildings were damaged as there were no main bombings here, so the old city has survived in its original shape and you can see great architecture all over the place.

It is well worth it to purchase the Museumkaart (museum card), which costs about 40 Euros. This allows you free entry to over 400 museums in the country, and can simply be purchased from the main museums. You can use this for one entire year, and it quickly pays for itself if you are preparing to go to only some museums. The well-known museums that you must visit are the Allard Peirson Museum, which is an archaeological museum, and the Diamond Museum.

You should also visit Anne Frank’s House, which is where Anne Frank hid from the Nazi’s and wrote her famous book. The museum card is however not valid here, so be prepared to pay around nine Euros for entry. You should also visit the Museum Amstelkring, which is a Catholic church converted into a museum. NEMO, a science centre, is an educational attraction that is very pleasurable to visit.

The Rembrandt House, where the artist Rembrandt lived with his wife, is also another place on the list of must-see places. The Rijksmuseum is another place to see, where works by the Dutch masters are housed. The Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to the Dutch painter, and has a large collection of his paintings, as well as Monet’s.

You can also take a planned trip around the city, with a tour machinist that has guided tours into the majority tourist spots. This will be highly priced than going everywhere yourself, however if you are not interested in looking through a guide book this will be a good choice.

The Red Light District, which is actually several canals and side streets, is an area where prostitution is legalised. It is also a place where there are many historic buildings as this is the oldest part of the city. The oldest church in Amsterdam, Oude Kerk, is also located here.

Amsterdam has so a lot of attractions for its tourists and it is impractical to cover everything in just one small visit. So, it is well worth the time and money to do research online before visiting the city, and use the above mentioned sites as an instruction to start off your tour.
