Awesome Luxury Lodge in Tanzania – Mnemba Island Lodge

by Kark Heinz

Mnemba, an untouched island off the coast of Zanzibar, is therapy for the spirit. This is where Bill Gates comes to unwind and savour Mother Nature’s delights. As tribute to its allure, Conde Nast Traveller chose Mnemba Island as one of the three most romantic ocean destinations in the world.

Mnemba is an Arabic term that means an octopus head. This island is found two kilometers north east of Zanzibar which is a 20 minute journey in a traditional 16 foot boat. A pure enveloping circumference of beach envelopes the island. To ensure that the magnificent coral reefs and unique sea life is preserved, a protection zone has been established around the island.

The only inhabitants of the island are lodge staff and guests, offering luxurious privacy and guaranteed exclusivity unparalleled on the African coastline. Mnemba Island features just ten en suite banda cottages, bordered on three sides by tropical beach forest and overlooking the beach and coral reef.

Each exquisite banda has been hand-woven and thatched from tree branches and traditional Zanzibari palm-matting. The food here is great; the chef prepares mouthwatering cuisine with exotic delicacies.

Diving is an exciting and adventurous activity that is carried out at the Mnemba lodge. A valid diving certificate is required. There is a professional diving school that offers training for an extra cost. The 200 -meter protected zone offers sanctuary to a myriad of aquatic animals and magnificent coral reefs.

The protected zone falls under the control of the Conservation Corporation Africa giving it exclusive trans versing rights over the area. The lagoon is synonymous with a huge fish tank filled with colorful marine life. There are more than 300 species of fish that have been identified. The lagoon hosts the striped dolphin, the gigantic, whale shark which despite its massive size is quite harmless. There is also a variety of game fish like the marlin barracuda which are tagged before being released back to the lagoon.

There are lots of fun filled water activities like scuba diving, kayaking, fly-fishing, swimming, wind surfing, snorkeling. The island is home not only to aquatic life but to birds as well hence proving a chance to have breathtaking view birds. You could also choose to take a walk around the island or simply laze in the sun and improve your sun tan.

The option of adventure doesn’t end there, you could choose to tour the ancient ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar or go for deep sea fishing. If you aren’t up for the hustle and bustle you could choose to indulge in therapeutic treatments or a relaxing message. Mobile reception isn’t that good on the island, a broadband WiFi signal is available on the island.
